Large-scale tourism cause significant damage, and in June 2018, Maya Bay was close to the public to allow the coral and other marine life time to recover.
After being closed for almost four years, Maya Bay finally reopened on January 1, 2022. The number of people who can visit each day has been capped, and a designated swimming area has been set up to reduce the risk of disturbing the ecosystem. The freeze appears to have helped Maya Bay’s ecosystem. The national park shared some media depicting the bay on its Facebook page late last year. Images of a bay that didn’t seen to have any people in it cause a stir on Thai social media because they were so different from pictures taken just a few years earlier.
